Theme

Have you ever been in a life or death situation? Probably not. Mainly all of us day to day people haven’t. We try to keep to ourselves not bother other people, go to school or go to work, go home watch some TV eat sleep and do it all again the next day. In the novel “Among The Free” Luke the main character has a new adventure of life or death situations every day. Ever since the population police had made it where third children were illegal Luke had to be hidden from everyone. Not knowing whether he was going to get caught and killed or be unseen and safe, that isn’t a life anyone should have to live. He eventually is able to be out in the open but with a fake name and I.D. Still it doesn’t help his situation being a population police officer himself. Luke is faced with a life or death situation when he is handed a gun and told to shoot an old women who disobeyed the population police order to go to the towns center for new I.Ds. He Can either shoot the old woman or drop the gun and have a huge chance of getting killed by the population police for being disobedient. No kid should be given a gun to kill an elder. Luke has been put through more life and death situations than anyone I’ve ever heard about.

Prediction

I predict that in the end of my book "Among The Free" Luke the main character will soon find out that the population police have officially fallen and third children are finally free after several years of living in fear. I believe this because in the middle of the book a small town takes a weapon that Luke dropped and kill a population police officer and then Luke runs to a different town and faints and the town gives him something to drink and they overcome the population police by refusing to give him to them. In my mind that shows that in the end the population police will fall.

Character analysis

Luke Scrawny doesn't like having to leave a form of shelter Can't read people relies on friends always hangs on to things from the past scared of every possibility Luke Changed Stronger Leaves shelter when information or survival items needed Still can't read people but tries anyways doesn't rely on friends for everything he does still can't forget things from past still worries about every possibility

Truth or False

I never met my grandpa, he died before I was born. He was a sheriff down in Texas for a long time.
He was divorced from my grandma. He lived to be ninety then had a heart attack and died. I don’t know if he was a nice grandpa or mean, but I guess I'll never know.

Sleeping

Authors note:I wrote this for writing circles.

Sleeping is my favorite time in the world because dreams are fun. When you’re sleeping all you’re thinking about is not waking up. I sleep sometimes but during the school week i cant sleep because school has to start so early!

Rhymes

Authors note: I wrote this because it was the topic for our writing circles.

There once was a rhyme that traveled for quite some time the man who wrote it was quite fine. He wrote using quote on quote, word on word, when he was done he attached it to a little bird and that bird was given a cheese curd. The bird flew directly through the sky after the man had said bye, bye. The rhyme was great the rhyme was good until the bird was hit by another man’s truck hood. The man found the paper he balled it up and said see you later little piece of paper. The rhyme ended up where it started with the same man so the man threw it in the can because clearly no one had been a fan.

Man from The Other Side

Authors note: I really liked this book so it was not very hard to right this essay.

Uri Orlev the author of “Man from The Other Side” was able to write a fictional story but still show the struggles of the very real Nazi occupations’. This book shows bravery and friendship, sadness and happiness, death and life. Merrek goes through struggles that most people will never have to face. He sees things most people won’t and wouldn’t want to see.

“Man from The Other Side” shows friendship when Merrek a 14 year old boy and a Jewish man are brought together. They are brought together after Merrek robbed a Jew and his mother cried for Merrek and his evil doings he promised her he would give it to another Jew. Therefore they had met. Merrek then took the man and brought him to his grandparents for awhile. They became good friends within that time.

The bravery of Merrek kicks in when he helps the man reach the ghetto to help the resistance. The resistance was made up of Jews and Poles. On the way the Germans blow up a tunnel that would get Merrek home so Merrek fought for the resistance until his stepfather came to get him and a number of other people. During the fighting he watched his new friend get attacked as him and the German fell off the building to their deaths. Merrek runs down there and gets another boy to help him pull them apart because their hands were still clenched to each other.

After they were separated Merrek carried his friend’s body around, blood had covered him, than someone found him and took him to his stepfather. Merrek had insisted on the man having a proper burial, showing he cared dearly for his friend. They then went through more tunnels to their escape from the ghetto making a quick getaway. These events made Merrek a stronger man in his life.

As you can tell there is a lot of friendship and bravery in the book. I would suggest to friends to read this amazing book. Most of the people reading the book will never face these obstacles in their life and should be happy to life a happier life than Merreks. This book keeps you involved and interested page after page.

Drilling in The Arctic

Authors note: I Had to write on this for an assignment in S.S. but i can also use it as an essay in L.A.

America has been wondering if we should drill for oil in the Arctic since 1970. I am against drilling in the Arctic. But there are people that want to drill and people that want to keep the animals and their habitat there alive. Some of the natives there actual want them to drill on their land so they can make the money and probably move somewhere warmer.

According to the ANWR if there was another spill 1000s of animals will die, such as the polar bears, grizzlies, Arctic wolves, caribou and the endangered shaggy musk ox, the water would be contaminated, and it would take forever to clean up. The waste of sewage and scrap metal would get in the water therefore contaminating the drinking water killing people as well as animals. Which would force natives to evacuate their homes.

The ANWR say the drilling would last as long as 6 months which isn't a very long supply at all. The drillers say they would only use 2000 acres of the 17.2 million acres would be used but there isn't just one huge reservoir but 30 separate pools of oil. This would give them reason to expand their oil drilling. After the drilling was done the machines might stay there or be knocked down but either way where ever they were will take a long time to become a home, safe place, or birthing ground for the wildlife.

Most natives that live there are completely against drilling because that is their home land and they want to keep it looking the way it does. But other natives are only in it for money and that’s exactly what they would get out of it but they would also loose land clean water and animals. The ANWR is against the drilling because they have researched every possibility of what could happen and not a lot are good. Most show that the oil supply there would only last 6 months.

Our economy would probably go back up for awhile and oil prices would go down for those 6 months. After the oil supply is gone, the gas prices will shoot way up again, this time probably higher than before we drilled. Drilling in the Arctic doesn’t really help anyone at all and for sure doesn’t help our economy.

I don’t think we should drill in the arctic. Because the environment there would be destroyed, and most of the animals would die. The people who live there could lose some of their resources. Our economy wouldn’t be helped by this at all, and gas prices would just go right back up after all of the supply in the Arctic was gone. So to Americas question if we should drill in the Arctic I would say, no.

All Summer in a Day

Authors not: I didn't have anything to write on so i was assigned this.

“All Summer in a Day” written by Ray Bradley was a good short story of how being a bully can ruin parts of people’s lives whether it be missing the sun come out for the first time in 7 years or just saying they suck at a sport. This book makes you feel the pain that Margot the main character is feeling when no one believes she has ever seen the sun before just because they haven’t. She tries not to listen to them but everyone has their braking point. I think if there was more to this short story that when she is let out of the closet that they put her in than she would freak out and start a fight.

This book shows bullying and sadness. She gets bullied because she moved from earth to a planet where the sun only comes out for one hour every seven years and no one believes she knows what the sun looks like. They would make fun of her; push her around all because she knew what the sun looked like. Then the day the sun came out they locked her in a closet so she would miss it. If that was happening in real life when the sun came out for only an hour I wouldn’t miss it if my life depended on it.

It shows sadness because she never wanted to go to a different planet so she is sad, doesn’t have friend, and misses the sun and has to wait seven more years. Everyone in the story seems sad because they don’t remember seeing the sun because they were only 2 when it came out. It makes you feel bad for them because in their sleep they try and describe the sun to themselves.

The Rhyme of Rhymes

Authors note: We had to use some words from the words that pooped into our heads after we read the word mystery so I made a long rhyme!

Pete was a very weak boy and every week he would go to the gym but the only muscle that he knew how to use were his feet and the heat would burn his feet. So instead he started to read a book about captain hook. Then he wanted to cook but he accidentally cooked his foot! So he then read a mystery book but he had to look and he had no eyes which made his week go by like a fly flying through the wind. So he cried because he relied on his mother and brother who were poor and his mother was always sore. He figured he was going to die so he said his goodbyes and lied to all his friends of where he would be so he would cry and thus he was going to die of sadness and madness. His dad was dead because he had been hit in the head by a bear that had no hair so he was a bare bear. Now back to the fly that flew but had no clue how to talk so he would fly and eventually die, like this paragraph and on my behalf I love this world so I hurled into the sky because I know how to fly because I am super-man and I can rhyme so here are my goodbyes I thank you for reading my book and there will never be a hook to my look because I am not captain hook!

Death and The Arrow

Authors note: I liked this book so i used it for the essay.

“Death and The Arrow” shows dedication, and friendship. I can relate to this book because I am dedicated to what is important and I would do anything for a good friend. This book shows the best friendship between two completely different people, a thief and a normal hard working boy. They don't let anything or anyone ruin their friendship, especially Toms' father who hates Will, Toms' best friend.

The book shows dedication with tom never giving up on his friends. Throughout the whole book he is with his friends trying to find the killer of his best friend tom. Tom goes through very tough times but never loses hope that he will find the killer. that is inspiring and tells me to never give up on anything that really matters.

The author "Chris Priestley" showed friendship by having made a great friendship from Will being a thief and Tom being a normal boy. This all started by Will trying to rob Tom of his pocket watch that his father gave to him out of trust. Every time they would meet Will would take the watch, but Tom knew him so well that he would instantly ask for it back. That is one of the best friendships I've ever heard of.

This was a great book, I wouldn't hesitate from telling someone how much I loved it. It kept me interested with new murders and new clues that lead Tom closer to finding the killer of his best friend. It is a sad, happy, and mysterious book.

the big giant.

authors note:I didn't know what to write about so i made this in five minutes

There once was a giant who was the last of his kind. No one knew he existed because he lived in a cave that no one could get to. One day the cave started collapsing so the giant jumped out and landed in the field in front of the old cave which caused an earthquake! Scientist were amazed that there was an earthquake where they were which made everyone scared. The scientist pin pointed the source of the earthquake which leads them to the giant!

The giant was knocked out from the fall so the scientist didn’t run when they saw him. Instead they called the military! They had the giant tied up before he woke up. When he did wake up all the little people were standing on his chest. He didn’t yell or scare them at all instead he asked why he was tied up and they said so the he could not eat them. He was very offended by this! He explained to the people that he was a very friendly giant. They asked then why have you never been here before? He said that he knew that your people would never accept me. They all looked at each other and then asked the giant to prove that he was a friendly giant. He told them that he couldn’t do that tied up.

They set him free and then he made the old cave into a big building for the little people to stay in. the people were very happy! Not everyone liked the giant but he was okay with that because he liked everyone no matter what they thought. 5 years after he left the cave he stubbed his toe on a building and the building fell! He was then fired at by the military and killed! They buried him in the ocean and yeas past and people never talked about the giant so he was forgotten forever.

The mouse who wanted to be a horse.

Authors note: I liked this story i wrote because it shows to be happy with who you are and to be who you are.

There once was a lonely little mouse, he had no friends other than mice and rats that were eating garbage which he hated. He wanted to be a horse! He knew this could never happen unless he went to see the wizard. The only problem was the wizard charged money which the mouse did not have. He would think all day of ways to get money and he would dream of becoming the amazing horse.

One day the mouse found a job that would give him $7.00 an hour; this meant that he would only have to work for 5 hours! The wizard charged $35.00 and for mice that is not cheap at all. The job was not pleasant but he wanted to be a horse and that’s what he was going to be. He worked the five hours quick the job which was cleaning up the scraps of food the humans would put in the garbage, and he went to the wizard.

The wizard had a very surprised look on his face when the mouse had asked to be changed into a horse. The wizard took the money and turned the mouse into an amazing horse! The mouse was very happy with the wizards work. The mouse left a horse and went home to show everyone else that he was no longer a mouse! Everyone was amazed at him. He then left his home and went to the open fields to try out his new horse legs which worked very well.

He lived the rest of his life as a horse, and he never complained of what he looked like again because he had no one to complain to. He had lost all his mice and rat friends his parents died a year after his transformation. This had made him sad. All the other horses ignored him because they knew he had left his friends and family to become a horse when he was a mouse, which they found very selfish. The mouse that became a horse was brought into this world a mouse and died an unhappy horse.

Don't take life serious.

Authors note: I searched quotes from famous people and this came up so I wrote about it.

"Life is to important to take SERIOUSLY!" (Oscar Wilde)

This quote is a very nice quote because I feel that we shouldn’t take life seriously but we should still take a lot of things serious. If we took everything serious life would be boring movies would be missing the comedy. I try not to take most things in life less serious. School should be taken serious, a comedian making fun of you at a comedy club shouldn’t be taken serious. Life is to important and to short to be stuck up about everything. I think what Oscar Wilde was trying to say is live life happy and loose. I really like this quote.

The sad and happy life of a little piece of paper.

Authors note:I didn't really know what to write about and I don't know how i thought of this but I'm happy with my work.

I started as a nice spruce tree until one day some men I had never seen in my part of the Forrest came. They started cutting down tree after tree right in front of me, and then they came to me! I was cut down and taken away with all the other trees. It was a long ride in something very big, I had never seen one in my long life. It took me to a very big factory; before I even entered the building I could hear the screams of my fellow trees.

Once I was inside I saw what I had been hearing about in my Forrest. Endless rows of paper! It was horrifying! I never believed the other trees when they told me that because I was the biggest spruce they had ever seen that I would become lots and lots of paper! They put me in the machine that turns us trees into paper. When I came out my thoughts and sight stayed only on one piece of paper.

I was put with a stack of 199 other pieces of paper not including me. And I was sent to a school that was put where I used to live! I was handed to a little boy that would tear the edges off of me which wasn’t a very pleasant feeling. He would right with these things that looked like twigs from another tree, they would leave black lines and figures all over me and when I had barely any white left showing on me he threw me into a blue bin filled with other crumbled pieces of paper.

Hours passed and more and more paper was thrown over me. I could still see a bit of light through the other pieces of paper, but then all the lights turned off and we were moving! I was so scared of what might happen next! The only thing that happened after that was we were thrown into a bigger bin and that was a relief, for the moment. I went to sleep and woke up to what sounded like the thing that had carried me away from my Forrest, we seemed to be getting higher and then going upside down! There was a brief moment of light and then again the light fell into darkness.

We were taken back to another factory! Yet this time I didn’t hear the screams I did at the last factory this time I only heard the machines. When I was inside all the paper was in a big bin where it looked like they were being put together. This happened to me and other papers and then we were turned into a different kind of paper it looked like the cup-holders I saw all around my Forrest. I was put into a place where people came to get food and fast! And the person who got me and the other pieces of paper that was put together with me to a Forrest! They left us there as I had hoped.

For the rest of the time that we lived without disappearing because of the rains that came down and ate away at our fragile paper. I spent most of that life looking at the other trees hoping this would not happen to them. For the time I was still there nothing did happen to them no people came no weird things that take trees away came it was very peaceful. I didn’t live the best life but the start and end were the best times I’ve ever had.

Something New

Authors note: I read this poem and new i could right about it because i like trying new things.

"A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new" Albert Einstein

I like this quote because it shows that everyone makes mistakes as long as they are willing to try new things. I can take a new class and make allot of mistakes but I at least tried. Trying new sports is fun because you can mess up an end it but its the fact that you tried it that counts. What I feel like he was trying to say was don't live life doing the same thing every day try new things maybe screw up but at least you tried.

Super-Hamster

Authors note: This was an easy but fun topic to write about I liked it.

One day a little girl asked her mom for a pet hamster, the mother said no because she wanted to surprise her. The mother went to the pet store and bought the first hamster she saw. When the little girl got the hamster it was just a baby and the little girl made her own hamster food that made the hamster grow and grow until it was 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide and he could fly!

She named him super-hamster he didn't do anything a super hero would do like save life and kill evil villains. He just flew in circles and destroyed cups and bowels. No one in the little girls family understood why but they just let him do what he wanted. The hamster kept growing and eventually he was 15 feet tall and 10 feet wide he had to live in the garage. He lived to be 23 in human years and died from being 30 feet tall and 40 feet wide he exploded! The mess took 3 months to clean up but when it was done everyone remembered the hamster called Super-Hamster.

Super teeth

Authors note:I didn't think this would be an easy topic to write about but when i set my mind to it i got the job done.

Long, long ago there was a molar but this wasn’t just any ordinary molar this was a SUPER-MOLAR! He could bite down with 500 pounds of pressure, he never got cavities and never lost his bright white color! No one could destroy the Super-Molar, until the evil Dr.Dentist came to the town of teeth-ville. Everyone knew the evil Dr.Dentist he would pull teeth easily, even the police teeth were afraid to go near him.

Super-Molar was taking a stroll in the park when Dr.Dentist Came out of no where and killed him! It was the worst day in the town of teeth-ville. Dr.Dentist was spreading tooth decay and acids. After three days all the teeth in teeth-ville were dead. Every other tooth in the world was forced to live in the mouth of humans. Some had good lives got brushed and flossed every day. Others died off quickly because of poor dental hygiene of the human mouth they were in. This is why no human has ever seen the town of teeth-ville and no human ever will.
